Sitting inside a barn in Ames, Iowa where Donald Trump is about to hold a campaign rally, Lana Benz says she is “100 per cent” behind the property tycoon who has dominated the 2016 race for the White House.
“I like his stance on immigration,” says Ms Benz, who along with almost everyone at the rally is white. “I just love that he has spoken exactly what the rest of us have always thought.”

Immigration might seem an odd concern for someone in a state far from the Mexico border where Hispanics — the main target of Mr Trump’s anti-immigrant stance — make up 6 per cent of the population. But she and her friend Trudy Wilson say their town of Marshalltown has changed dramatically as thousands of Hispanics have come to work at JBS, a Brazilian-owned meatpacking plant.
“Our school population is probably 60 per cent Hispanic”, says Ms Wilson, adding that there were only a few Hispanics in the class when their children graduated about a decade ago. “We wish that they would learn our culture and the English language.”
