President Trump was poised on Thursday to end the “Dreamers” program as it currently exists, Fox News reported.
The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals was created by the Obama administration in 2012, giving undocumented immigrants who were brought to the US as children a reprieve from deportation.
Trump will announce that he will allow the Dreamers program to “lapse.”
But the nearly 800,000 undocumented youth in the program will be allowed to stay until their work permits expire.
The program provided them with temporary work permits if they submitted biometric data to the government, passed a background check and maintained a clean criminal record.
Immigrant rights groups are rallying to keep it, with the support of Democrats and many Republicans alike.
Big business also supports DACA, fearing companies will lose valuable employees.
