A SENIOR officer with Immigration department, Margreth Kokushubira Prosper (33), appeared before the Kinondoni Resident Magistrate’s Court in Dar es Salaam charged with two bribery counts relating to the on gonging crackdown of foreigners living and working in the country illegally.
Ms Prosper, who is an Immigration Officer Sergeant, is accused of soliciting an advantage of 6,000 US dollars (about 12m/-) from a Chinese national, Lizhi Ping, and received a sum of 3,000 US dollars bribe from the same person.
The court heard that, the immigration officer, who resided at Kitunda, had promised the Chinese that she would release 10 passports of her fellow citizens that were being held.
Magreth denied the charges and the magistrate granted her bail on condition of securing one surety who signed bond of 3m/-. The case was adjourned to February 24, for preliminary hearing.
Investigations into the case, according to the prosecution, have been completed. A prosecutor from the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) Faraja Sambara, told the court that the accused person is alleged to have solicited the 6,000 US dollars from the Chinese between January 1 and 30, this year, within Kinondoni District.
The prosecution alleged that the accused person committed the offence as an inducement so that she could return the 10 passports belonging to the Chinese citizens after scrutinising them.
It was alleged further that on January 27, this year, at Kinondoni Municipal Office at Parking area in Kinondoni District, being Immigration Officer Sergeant, Ms Prosper corruptly obtained an advantage of 3,000 US dollars from Ping, for similar purposes.
The arraignment of the immigration officer comes few days after taking off of the exercise to nab foreigners who were living and working in the country without having valid permits.
