JANESVILLE, Wis. (WMTV) — Voces de la Frontera and local supporters called on House Speaker Paul Ryan to extend protections for DACA recipients Wednesday using an electronic billboard.
The billboard reads “Thanksgiving is about family. Help stop 800,000 families from being ripped apart.” The billboard will circle around Janesville during the Thanksgiving week.
Earlier this year, the Justice Department announced it was ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. The DACA program gives some protections to Dreamers, or undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children.
Voces organizers, along with some local Dreamers, unveiled the billboard at an event in Janesville Wednesday. They shared stories of how DACA has helped them. Now, they say, their future is unknown.
“We gave our information to the federal government. We trusted that the positives would outweigh the negatives and now they have this information,” Voces de la Frontera organizer Cendi Trujillo said. “Why shouldn’t I think that one day immigration is going to show up at my house?”
Am I scared? Yes. Do I show it? Not as much. I’m not an emotional person like that, but yeah I’m scared. This is my livelihood. This is my town,” Janesville Dreamer Erik Vazquez said.
NBC15 emailed Speaker Ryan’s staff and called his office looking for comment. We did not receive a reply.
